QUARTETS FOR THE END OF TIME WITH AARON BOYD

Following the death of Joseph Haydn in 1809, his sixty-eight string quartets—would spur subsequent composers to write some of their greatest music. Violinist Aaron Boydexplores not only the Beethoven quartets inspired by Haydn's genius, but also the historic ensembles—from the nineteenth century's Schuppanzigh and Joachim Quartets to the dynamic ensembles of our own day—who have brought them to life.

This lecture is preceded by a free afternoon Prelude Performance at 5 p.m. by the 2023 International Program artists.

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center: Romantic Perspectives

The Romantic movement in music blossomed across Europe during the nineteenth century. Johannes Brahms adhered to the discipline of the classical age, yet, who has ever composed more romantically and with such passion? Gustav Mahler penned his only work of chamber music as an idealistic student. And César Franck brought all of his sensuousness and seriousness to this epic quintet, one of the literature’s most cherished masterpieces.

- Presented by Harris Theater

The Romantic movement in music blossomed across Europe during the nineteenth century. Fueled by the vision of Beethoven, the poetry of Schubert, and the hyper-emotionalism of Schumann, composers tapped their inner selves, often deeply inspired by their native cultures. Johannes Brahms, declared to be the heir to the mantle of Beethoven, adhered to the discipline of the classical age, yet, who has ever composed more romantically and with such passion? Gustav Mahler, whose symphonies expanded music’s horizon by leaps and bounds, penned his only work of chamber music, this achingly beautiful movement, as an idealistic student. And César Franck, the lion of French romantic composers, brought all of his sensuousness and seriousness to this epic quintet, one of the literature’s most cherished masterpieces.

- Presented by St. Cecilia Music Center

The Romantic movement blossomed across Europe during the nineteenth century. Johannes Brahms’ Scherzo adhered to the discipline of the classical age, yet, who has ever composed more romantically and with such passion? Gustav Mahler penned his only work of chamber music, Quartet in A minor, as an idealistic student, while César Franck brought sensuousness and seriousness to his epic Quintet in F minor.

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center - 1891: Brahms's Clarinet Quintet

Before his death in 1897, Johannes Brahms memorialized his cherished, fast-disappearing Old World in works of breathtaking tenderness and profundity. Moved by the serene purity of the clarinet, he created a quintet for the ages, a heart-rending epitaph for himself and the 19th century combined. Schubert’s similar Fantasie, composed in the autumn of his life, and Schumann’s emotional Dichterliebe build a nostalgic musical path to Brahms’s late masterpiece.

Artists: Paul Appleby, tenor; Ken Noda, piano; Wu Han, piano; Aaron Boyd, violin; Francisco Fullana, violin; Yura Lee, violin/viola; Keith Robinson, cello; David Shifrin, clarinet

F. Schubert -Fantasie in F minor for Piano, Four Hands, D. 940, Op. 103 (1828); R. Schumann - Dichterliebe for Voice and Piano, Op. 48 (1840); J. Brahms - Quintet in B minor for Clarinet, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, Op. 115 (1891)
